Week 1: 5/22 – 5/26

 §         Monday, May 22, 2006 – Welcome and Orientation (364 SEB)

 o       Start at 9:30 AM.

o       Welcoming remarks.

o       Introduction of participating faculty and mentors

o       Introduction of participating students

o       Description of REU program, activities, expectations.

o       Open discussion on research: what constitutes a research project? How does it differ from a regular course assignment? What are the basic steps to follow when tackling a project for the first time?

o       Lunch with faculty and mentors (BD’s Mongolian Bar-B-Que)

o       2:00PM – Preliminary survey and survey of expectations

o       3:00PM – Employment paperwork; travel reimbursement paperwork (245 DHE)

o       4:00PM – campus tour  (101 North Foundation Hall)

 §         Tuesday, May 23, 2006 – Project Descriptions (364 SEB)

 o       Start at 9:30AM: 15-20 minute overview of each project

o       Boxed Lunch

o       2:00 – 3:00PM – Tour of library and online resources (255A Kresge); joint with SMART REU program

o       Library study hour

 §         Wednesday, May 24, 2006 – Project Selection (364 SEB)

o       Start at 9:30AM

o       Open discussion with faculty on projects

o       Survey on project preference

o       Project assignment

o       Apply for ID card

 §         Friday, May 25, 2006 –  Seminar and Picnic

o       9:30AM:  Seminar (364 SEB) – Introduction to automotive engines: Dr. Tom Asmus, DaimlerChrysler (ret.)

o       Picnic lunch with faculty and industrial mentors
