Program

The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program in the department of mechanical engineering at Oakland University was setup to provide meaningful, hands-on and timely 10-week summer research experiences to eight talented undergraduate engineering students from two and four year colleges across the United States. This program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense. Working in teams of two or three, students will work on automotive research projects involving fluid mechanics, heat transfer, energy and/or tribology. The projects will be individualized to the students’ particular interests (a list of past projects can be found under Past Years Projects). Students will be introduced to current problems, potential solutions, modern analytical and experimental methods and will be given the opportunities to explore under a close-coupled mentorship. It is hoped that such a program will engage participants in rewarding research experiences that excite and motivate them to pursue careers in scientific and engineering research.

Throughout this program, students will work closely with faculty, industrial mentors and graduate students; the industrial mentors are all highly qualified and experienced individuals who have volunteered to take part in this experience because they have a strong commitment to mentorship and are eager to share their knowledge and experiences with talented young students. In some cases, students might have the opportunity to conduct part of their research at a participating industrial site. Students will have get to improve their communication skills and confidence through oral presentations and written reports. Additional activities (such as field trips, meetings with working engineers, conferences and seminars) are planned. Students will receive financial support for full participation in this program.

This program is open to undergraduate engineering or pre-engineering students who have completed their sophomore or junior year. Participants must be US. citizens or permanent residents. One of the goals of this REU site is to address the nationwide problem of the under-representation of women and minorities in the sciences, technology, engineering and math  (STEM) and more specifically in the field of mechanical engineering, We thus highly encourage women and under-represented minority students to apply.

Please take the time to review this website for more information about our program. We think that we have setup an exciting summer program and look forward to receiving your application. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us,
